Every year in late January, Mendocino County, California, hosts its Crab and Wine Days, which was rated one of the Top 10 Seafood and Wine Festivals in North America and the Carribean by Coastal Living Magazine.
Mendocino County's coastline is an ideal spot for the harvesting of the Dungeness crab. During the fest the crab is paired with locally grown and produced wines. More than 30 wineries participate in the festival, so the Crab and Wine Passport is a necessity.
There are many events throughout the festival including the All Aboard Adventures cruise, the Cioppino Dinner and the Annual Crab Cake Cook-Off and Wine Tasting Competition.
The cruises take visitors on four to five hour boat rides that include whale watching and crab cooking demonstrations, with each participant catching up to 10 crabs. The Cioppino Dinner is a benefit for the Mendocino Coast Clinics, nonprofit community health centers, that features a family style meal in the historic Pentecost Hall in Fort Bragg, California. The meal features fresh bread in cioppino, salad, dessert and locally roasted coffee. And the cook-off and wine competition takes place under a tent where guests can feast on Dungeness crab cake concoctions prepared by popular, local chefs. The wine selected is specially picked from the amazing local wine region.
