Rome's International Chamber Ensemble has just opened its 30th summer season.
The annual summer program of Rome's International Chamber Ensemble opened this week with a repertoire of favorites from past seasons to commemmorate the music group's 30th anniversary.

The season, which kicked off with "The Four Seasons, from Vivaldi to Piazzolla," will continue until August 9 in the Courtyard of S. Ivo alla Sapienza, the halls of the original 15th century university in Rome, near Piazza Navona. All concerts begin at 9:30 p.m.

Classical works performed this year also include the romantic waltzes of Johann Strauss. A special program will be devoted to music from Argentina, accompanied by a tango dancing troupe.

But a special treat for honeymooners on a European vacation will be a series of concerts with repertoires that focus on American composers.

"Summertime to New York, New York," will include selections from the George Gershwin opera, Porgy and Bess; songs from the score of West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein; and a collection of Frank Sinatra's biggest hits, including songs written by Cole Porter. A second program focuses on American movie soundtracks.

The ensemble is one of many musical groups and artists that bring their talents to Rome's beautiful venues, from the city's soaring cathedrals to historic buildings that date back centuries.
