Recently, visitors to Washington, D.C., had the pleasure of watching some of the world's best golfers duke it out at the Congressional Country Club on Father's Day weekend. The U.S. Open, a Professional Golf Association tournament, drew large crowds who were interested in both a relaxing weekend and an opportunity to see talented athletes.
Rory McIlroy, a 22 year-old golfer from Ireland, won the tournament and redeemed himself after blowing a large lead at the Masters in April, according to the Washington Post. McIlroy finished 16 shots below par, pulling away from the competition early on Father's Day.
Although it was a historical moment, there are other sports games that you can attend when visiting the nation's capital at a later date. The Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals both play games throughout the winter at the Verizon Center in the downtown area, whether you're a hockey fan or basketball enthusiast.
If sports aren't your thing, Washington, D.C., has a number of cultural facilities worth visiting as well. The National Postal Museum and the National Guard Memorial Museum are both located in the nation's capitol, boasting artifacts that document the history of these two institutions.
