Boasting the largest gathering of bald eagles in the world, the Alaska Bald Eagle Festival offers visitors more than just bird watching - it has photography and scrap-booking workshops, tours, wildlife presentations, classes and live raptor presentations. This year’s festival will be held in Haines, Alaska, from November 9 to 13.
Sponsored by the American Bald Eagle Foundation and held at its headquarters, festival-goers also have the opportunity to be taken to the American Bald Eagle Preserve to view the annual Gathering of the Eagles, which attracts more than 3,000 of the creatures feeding on the late run of salmon. Visitors also are offered free nightly entertainment - such as the bald eagle chocolate extravaganza buffet - after the day’s activities.
Visitors to Haines can head to nearby Klukwan to take a tour and see how a Native American village operates. In addition to history and culture, the tour explores cultural practices like weaving, fishing, wood carving and beading.
The Haines area also is home to 10 totem poles, and visitors can witness the carvers in action at the Alaska Indian Arts in the Fort Seward area.
