The oldest jazz festival in Europe, Krakow's All Souls Jazz Festival, has been attracting international jazz musicians and fans for more than half a century. While the music, venues and artists change, the festival always showcases stylistic diversity, and holds Holy Mass on All Souls Day in one of its ancient churches during the festival.
In 1954, All Souls Day was the only day in the year that all the Polish jazz musicians had free to gather at a school gymnasium in Krakow for a jam session. The jazz lineup included Witold Kujawski, Marian Eile and Jacek Borowiec. This event became known as the first All Souls Jazz Festival and has since become an annual international sensation. While many concerts will be held in Krakow, other locations include Wieliczka, Niepolomice, and Trzebinia.
Couples should be sure to check out the Main Market Square while in Krakow. Also known as Rynek Krakowski, the square dates back to the 13th century and remains the largest medieval town square in Europe. Travelers can see the old brick buildings and palaces surrounding the square, as well as the Historical Museum of Krakow and the International Center of Culture. There is also the Sukiennice, a Renaissance trading hall which houses merchant kiosks and the National Museum upstairs.
After perusing the sites of the square, couples should sit down to a classic Polish meal and the famed Wierzynek's restaurant, famously located at the site of a great feast in 1364 supposedly lasting 21 days. According to historians, a merchant hosted the feast to honor European emperors and kings invited to Krakow by the Polish King Kasimir the Great. Today, the restaurant serves traditional Polish dishes including marinated pork sirloins in wild mushroom sauce and goose breast fillet.
